Das Gebet Jesu Christi für seine Jünger
17 Dies redete Jesus und hob seine Augen zum Himmel empor und sprach: Vater, die Stunde ist gekommen; verherrliche deinen Sohn, damit auch dein Sohn dich verherrliche
2 — gleichwie du ihm Vollmacht gegeben hast über alles Fleisch, damit er allen ewiges Leben gebe, die du ihm gegeben hast.
3 Das ist aber das ewige Leben, dass sie dich, den allein wahren Gott, und den du gesandt hast, Jesus Christus, erkennen.
4 Ich habe dich verherrlicht auf Erden; ich habe das Werk vollendet, das du mir gegeben hast, damit ich es tun soll.
5 Und nun verherrliche du mich, Vater, bei dir selbst mit der Herrlichkeit, die ich bei dir hatte, ehe die Welt war.
6 Ich habe deinen Namen den Menschen offenbar gemacht, die du mir aus der Welt gegeben hast; sie waren dein, und du hast sie mir gegeben, und sie haben dein Wort bewahrt.
7 Nun erkennen sie, dass alles, was du mir gegeben hast, von dir kommt;
8 denn die Worte, die du mir gegeben hast, habe ich ihnen gegeben, und sie haben sie angenommen und haben wahrhaft erkannt, dass ich von dir ausgegangen bin, und glauben, dass du mich gesandt hast.
9 Ich bitte für sie; nicht für die Welt bitte ich, sondern für die, welche du mir gegeben hast, weil sie dein sind.
10 Und alles, was mein ist, das ist dein, und was dein ist, das ist mein; und ich bin in ihnen verherrlicht.
11 Und ich bin nicht mehr in der Welt; diese aber sind in der Welt, und ich komme zu dir. Heiliger Vater, bewahre sie in deinem Namen, die du mir gegeben hast, damit sie eins seien, gleichwie wir!
12 Als ich bei ihnen in der Welt war, bewahrte ich sie in deinem Namen; die du mir gegeben hast, habe ich behütet, und keiner von ihnen ist verlorengegangen als nur der Sohn des Verderbens, damit die Schrift erfüllt würde.
13 Nun aber komme ich zu dir und rede dies in der Welt, damit sie meine Freude völlig in sich haben.
14 Ich habe ihnen dein Wort gegeben, und die Welt hasst sie; denn sie sind nicht von der Welt, gleichwie auch ich nicht von der Welt bin.
15 Ich bitte nicht, dass du sie aus der Welt nimmst, sondern dass du sie bewahrst vor dem Bösen.
16 Sie sind nicht von der Welt, gleichwie auch ich nicht von der Welt bin.
17 Heilige sie in deiner Wahrheit! Dein Wort ist Wahrheit.
18 Gleichwie du mich in die Welt gesandt hast, so sende auch ich sie in die Welt.
19 Und ich heilige mich selbst für sie, damit auch sie geheiligt seien in Wahrheit.
20 Ich bitte aber nicht für diese allein, sondern auch für die, welche durch ihr Wort an mich glauben werden,
21 auf dass sie alle eins seien, gleichwie du, Vater, in mir und ich in dir; auf dass auch sie in uns eins seien, damit die Welt glaube, dass du mich gesandt hast.
22 Und ich habe die Herrlichkeit, die du mir gegeben hast, ihnen gegeben, auf dass sie eins seien, gleichwie wir eins sind,
23 ich in ihnen und du in mir, damit sie zu vollendeter Einheit gelangen, und damit die Welt erkenne, dass du mich gesandt hast und sie liebst, gleichwie du mich liebst.
24 Vater, ich will, dass, wo ich bin, auch die bei mir seien, die du mir gegeben hast, damit sie meine Herrlichkeit sehen, die du mir gegeben hast; denn du hast mich geliebt vor Grundlegung der Welt.
25 Gerechter Vater, die Welt erkennt dich nicht; ich aber erkenne dich, und diese erkennen, dass du mich gesandt hast.
26 Und ich habe ihnen deinen Namen verkündet und werde ihn verkünden, damit die Liebe, mit der du mich liebst, in ihnen sei und ich in ihnen.
Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 “I have revealed you[a] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[e] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Das letzte Passahmahl und die Fußwaschung
13 Vor dem Passahfest aber, da Jesus wusste, dass seine Stunde gekommen war, aus dieser Welt zum Vater zu gehen: Wie er die Seinen geliebt hatte, die in der Welt waren, so liebte er sie bis ans Ende.[a]
2 Und während des Mahls, als schon der Teufel dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot, ins Herz gegeben hatte, ihn zu verraten,
3 da Jesus wusste, dass ihm der Vater alles in die Hände gegeben hatte und dass er von Gott ausgegangen war und zu Gott hinging,
4 stand er vom Mahl auf, legte sein Obergewand ab, nahm einen Schurz und umgürtete sich;
5 darauf goss er Wasser in das Becken und fing an, den Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und sie mit dem Schurz zu trocknen, mit dem er umgürtet war.
6 Da kommt er zu Simon Petrus, und dieser spricht zu ihm: Herr, du wäschst mir die Füße?
7 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Was ich tue, verstehst du jetzt nicht; du wirst es aber danach erkennen.
8 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Auf keinen Fall sollst du mir die Füße waschen! Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, so hast du keine Gemeinschaft mit mir.
9 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, nicht nur meine Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt!
10 Jesus spricht zu ihm: Wer gebadet ist, hat es nicht nötig, gewaschen zu werden, ausgenommen die Füße, sondern er ist ganz rein. Und ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle.
11 Denn er kannte seinen Verräter; darum sagte er: Ihr seid nicht alle rein.
12 Nachdem er nun ihre Füße gewaschen und sein Obergewand angezogen hatte, setzte er sich wieder zu Tisch und sprach zu ihnen: Versteht ihr, was ich euch getan habe?
13 Ihr nennt mich Meister und Herr[b] und sagt es mit Recht; denn ich bin es auch.
14 Wenn nun ich, der Herr und Meister, euch die Füße gewaschen habe, so sollt[c] auch ihr einander die Füße waschen;
15 denn ein Vorbild habe ich euch gegeben, damit auch ihr so handelt, wie ich an euch gehandelt habe.
16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr, noch der Gesandte größer als der ihn gesandt hat.
17 Wenn ihr dies wisst, glückselig seid ihr, wenn ihr es tut!
Jesus und der Verräter
18 Ich rede nicht von euch allen; ich weiß, welche ich erwählt habe. Doch muss die Schrift erfüllt werden: »Der mit mir das Brot isst, hat seine Ferse gegen mich erhoben«.[d]
19 Jetzt sage ich es euch, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr glaubt, wenn es geschehen ist, dass ich es bin.
20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer den aufnimmt, den ich senden werde, der nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.
21 Als Jesus dies gesagt hatte, wurde er im Geist erschüttert, und er bezeugte und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten!
22 Da sahen die Jünger einander an und wussten nicht, von wem er redete.
23 Einer seiner Jünger aber, den Jesus liebte, hatte [bei Tisch] seinen Platz an der Seite Jesu.[e]
24 Diesem winkt nun Simon Petrus, dass er forschen solle, wer es sei, von dem er rede.
25 Da lehnt sich jener an die Brust Jesu und spricht zu ihm: Herr, wer ist”s?
26 Jesus antwortete: Der ist”s, dem ich den eingetauchten Bissen geben werde. Und er taucht den Bissen ein und gibt ihn dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot.
27 Und nach dem Bissen, da fuhr der Satan in ihn. Da spricht Jesus zu ihm: Was du tun willst, das tue bald!
28 Es verstand aber keiner von denen, die zu Tisch saßen, wozu er ihm dies sagte.
29 Denn etliche meinten, weil Judas den Beutel hatte, sage Jesus zu ihm: Kaufe, was wir zum Fest benötigen!, oder er solle den Armen etwas geben.
30 Als nun jener den Bissen genommen hatte, ging er sogleich hinaus. Es war aber Nacht.
Die Verherrlichung Jesu und das neue Gebot
31 Als er nun hinausgegangen war, sprach Jesus: Jetzt ist der Sohn des Menschen verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht durch ihn[f]!
32 Wenn Gott verherrlicht ist durch ihn, so wird Gott auch ihn verherrlichen durch sich selbst, und er wird ihn sogleich verherrlichen.
33 Kinder[g], nur noch eine kleine Weile bin ich bei euch. Ihr werdet mich suchen, und wie ich zu den Juden sagte: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin könnt ihr nicht kommen!, so sage ich es jetzt auch zu euch.
34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, dass ihr einander lieben sollt, damit, wie ich euch geliebt habe, auch ihr einander liebt.
35 Daran wird jedermann erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe untereinander habt.
Die Ankündigung der Verleugnung durch Petrus
36 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, wohin gehst du? Jesus antwortete ihm: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen; du wirst mir aber später folgen.
37 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Mein Leben will ich für dich lassen!
38 Jesus antwortete ihm: Dein Leben willst du für mich lassen? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Der Hahn wird nicht krähen, bis du mich dreimal verleugnet hast!
Der Herr tröstet seine Jünger. Jesus Christus, der einzige Weg zum Vater
14 Euer Herz erschrecke nicht! Glaubt an Gott und glaubt an mich!
2 Im Haus meines Vaters sind viele Wohnungen; wenn nicht, so hätte ich es euch gesagt. Ich gehe hin, um euch eine Stätte zu bereiten.
3 Und wenn ich hingehe und euch eine Stätte bereite, so komme ich wieder und werde euch zu mir nehmen, damit auch ihr seid, wo ich bin.
4 Wohin ich aber gehe, wisst ihr, und ihr kennt den Weg.
5 Thomas spricht zu ihm: Herr, wir wissen nicht, wohin du gehst, und wie können wir den Weg kennen?
6 Jesus spricht zu ihm: Ich bin der Weg und die Wahrheit und das Leben; niemand kommt zum Vater als nur durch mich!
7 Wenn ihr mich erkannt hättet, so hättet ihr auch meinen Vater erkannt; und von nun an erkennt ihr ihn und habt ihn gesehen.
8 Philippus spricht zu ihm: Herr, zeige uns den Vater, so genügt es uns!
9 Jesus spricht zu ihm: So lange Zeit bin ich bei euch, und du hast mich noch nicht erkannt, Philippus? Wer mich gesehen hat, der hat den Vater gesehen. Wie kannst du da sagen: Zeige uns den Vater?
10 Glaubst du nicht, dass ich im Vater bin und der Vater in mir ist? Die Worte, die ich zu euch rede, rede ich nicht aus mir selbst; und der Vater, der in mir wohnt, der tut die Werke.
11 Glaubt mir, dass ich im Vater bin und der Vater in mir ist; wenn nicht, so glaubt mir doch um der Werke willen!
12 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer an mich glaubt, der wird die Werke auch tun, die ich tue, und wird größere als diese tun, weil ich zu meinem Vater gehe.
13 Und alles, was ihr bitten werdet in meinem Namen, das will ich tun, damit der Vater verherrlicht wird in dem Sohn.
14 Wenn ihr etwas bitten werdet in meinem Namen, so werde ich es tun.
Die Verheißung des Heiligen Geistes. Gehorsam und Liebe
15 Liebt ihr mich, so haltet meine Gebote!
16 Und ich will den Vater bitten, und er wird euch einen anderen Beistand[h] geben, dass er bei euch bleibt in Ewigkeit,
17 den Geist der Wahrheit, den die Welt nicht empfangen kann, denn sie beachtet ihn nicht und erkennt ihn nicht; ihr aber erkennt ihn, denn er bleibt bei euch und wird in euch sein.
18 Ich lasse euch nicht als Waisen zurück; ich komme zu euch.
19 Noch eine kleine Weile, und die Welt sieht mich nicht mehr; ihr aber seht mich; weil ich lebe, sollt auch ihr leben!
20 An jenem Tag werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich in meinem Vater bin und ihr in mir und ich in euch.
21 Wer meine Gebote festhält und sie befolgt, der ist es, der mich liebt; wer aber mich liebt, der wird von meinem Vater geliebt werden, und ich werde ihn lieben und mich ihm offenbaren.
22 Da spricht Judas — nicht der Ischariot — zu ihm: Herr, wie kommt es, dass du dich uns offenbaren willst und nicht der Welt?
23 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wenn jemand mich liebt, so wird er mein Wort befolgen, und mein Vater wird ihn lieben, und wir werden zu ihm kommen und Wohnung bei ihm machen.
24 Wer mich nicht liebt, der befolgt meine Worte nicht; und das Wort, das ihr hört, ist nicht mein, sondern des Vaters, der mich gesandt hat.
25 Dies habe ich zu euch gesprochen, während ich noch bei euch bin;
26 der Beistand aber, der Heilige Geist, den der Vater senden wird in meinem Namen, der wird euch alles lehren und euch an alles erinnern, was ich euch gesagt habe.
Der Friede Jesu Christi
27 Frieden hinterlasse ich euch; meinen Frieden gebe ich euch. Nicht wie die Welt gibt, gebe ich euch; euer Herz erschrecke nicht und verzage nicht!
28 Ihr habt gehört, dass ich euch sagte: Ich gehe hin, und ich komme zu euch! Wenn ihr mich lieb hättet, so würdet ihr euch freuen, dass ich gesagt habe: Ich gehe zum Vater; denn mein Vater ist größer als ich.
29 Und nun habe ich es euch gesagt, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr glaubt, wenn es geschieht.
30 Ich werde nicht mehr viel mit euch reden; denn es kommt der Fürst dieser Welt, und in mir hat er nichts[i].
31 Damit aber die Welt erkennt, dass ich den Vater liebe und so handle, wie es mir der Vater geboten hat: Steht auf und lasst uns von hier fortgehen!
Der Weinstock und die Reben
15 Ich bin der wahre Weinstock, und mein Vater ist der Weingärtner.
2 Jede Rebe an mir, die keine Frucht bringt, nimmt er weg; jede aber, die Frucht bringt, reinigt er, damit sie mehr Frucht bringt.
3 Ihr seid schon rein um des Wortes willen, das ich zu euch geredet habe.
4 Bleibt in mir, und ich [bleibe] in euch! Gleichwie die Rebe nicht von sich selbst aus Frucht bringen kann, wenn sie nicht am Weinstock bleibt, so auch ihr nicht, wenn ihr nicht in mir bleibt.
5 Ich bin der Weinstock, ihr seid die Reben. Wer in mir bleibt und ich in ihm, der bringt viel Frucht; denn getrennt von mir[j] könnt ihr nichts tun.
6 Wenn jemand nicht in mir bleibt, so wird er weggeworfen wie die Rebe und verdorrt; und solche sammelt man und wirft sie ins Feuer, und sie brennen.
7 Wenn ihr in mir bleibt und meine Worte in euch bleiben, so werdet ihr bitten, was ihr wollt, und es wird euch zuteilwerden.
8 Dadurch wird mein Vater verherrlicht, dass ihr viel Frucht bringt und meine Jünger werdet.
9 Gleichwie mich der Vater liebt, so liebe ich euch; bleibt in meiner Liebe!
10 Wenn ihr meine Gebote haltet, so bleibt ihr in meiner Liebe, gleichwie ich die Gebote meines Vaters gehalten habe und in seiner Liebe geblieben bin.
11 Dies habe ich zu euch geredet, damit meine Freude in euch bleibe und eure Freude völlig werde.
Das Gebot der Liebe
12 Das ist mein Gebot, dass ihr einander liebt, gleichwie ich euch geliebt habe.
13 Größere Liebe hat niemand als die, dass einer sein Leben lässt für seine Freunde.
14 Ihr seid meine Freunde, wenn ihr tut, was immer ich euch gebiete.
15 Ich nenne euch nicht mehr Knechte, denn der Knecht weiß nicht, was sein Herr tut; euch aber habe ich Freunde genannt, weil ich euch alles verkündet habe, was ich von meinem Vater gehört habe.
16 Nicht ihr habt mich erwählt, sondern ich habe euch erwählt und euch dazu bestimmt, dass ihr hingeht und Frucht bringt und eure Frucht bleibt, damit der Vater euch gibt, was auch immer ihr ihn bitten werdet in meinem Namen.
17 Das gebiete ich euch, dass ihr einander liebt.
Der Hass der Welt gegen die Jünger. Ankündigung von Verfolgungen
18 Wenn euch die Welt hasst, so wisst, dass sie mich vor euch gehasst hat.
19 Wenn ihr von der Welt wärt, so hätte die Welt das Ihre lieb; weil ihr aber nicht von der Welt seid, sondern ich euch aus der Welt heraus erwählt habe, darum hasst euch die Welt.
20 Gedenkt an das Wort, das ich zu euch gesagt habe: Der Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr. Haben sie mich verfolgt, so werden sie auch euch verfolgen; haben sie auf mein Wort [argwöhnisch] achtgehabt, so werden sie auch auf das eure [argwöhnisch] achthaben[k].
21 Aber das alles werden sie euch antun um meines Namens willen; denn sie kennen den nicht, der mich gesandt hat.
22 Wenn ich nicht gekommen wäre und zu ihnen geredet hätte, so hätten sie keine Sünde; nun aber haben sie keinen Vorwand für ihre Sünde.
23 Wer mich hasst, der hasst auch meinen Vater.
24 Wenn ich nicht die Werke unter ihnen getan hätte, die kein anderer getan hat, so hätten sie keine Sünde; nun aber haben sie es gesehen und hassen doch sowohl mich als auch meinen Vater;
25 doch [dies geschieht,] damit das Wort erfüllt wird, das in ihrem Gesetz geschrieben steht: »Sie hassen mich ohne Ursache«.[l]
26 Wenn aber der Beistand kommen wird, den ich euch vom Vater senden werde, der Geist der Wahrheit, der vom Vater ausgeht, so wird der von mir Zeugnis geben;
27 und auch ihr werdet Zeugnis geben, weil ihr von Anfang an bei mir gewesen seid.
16 Dies habe ich zu euch geredet, damit ihr keinen Anstoß nehmt.
2 Sie werden euch aus der Synagoge ausschließen; es kommt sogar die Stunde, wo jeder, der euch tötet, meinen wird, Gott einen Dienst zu erweisen.[m]
3 Und dies werden sie euch antun, weil sie weder den Vater noch mich kennen.
4 Ich aber habe euch dies gesagt, damit ihr daran denkt, wenn die Stunde kommt, dass ich es euch gesagt habe. Dies aber habe ich euch nicht von Anfang an gesagt, weil ich bei euch war.
Das Wirken des Heiligen Geistes
5 Nun aber gehe ich hin zu dem, der mich gesandt hat, und niemand unter euch fragt mich: Wohin gehst du?,
6 sondern weil ich euch dies gesagt habe, ist euer Herz voll Traurigkeit.
7 Aber ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Es ist gut für euch, dass ich hingehe; denn wenn ich nicht hingehe, so kommt der Beistand nicht zu euch. Wenn ich aber hingegangen bin, will ich ihn zu euch senden.
8 Und wenn jener kommt, wird er die Welt überführen von Sünde und von Gerechtigkeit und vom Gericht;
9 von Sünde, weil sie nicht an mich glauben;
10 von Gerechtigkeit aber, weil ich zu meinem Vater gehe und ihr mich nicht mehr seht;
11 vom Gericht, weil der Fürst dieser Welt gerichtet ist.
12 Noch vieles hätte ich euch zu sagen; aber ihr könnt es jetzt nicht ertragen.
13 Wenn aber jener kommt, der Geist der Wahrheit, so wird er euch in die ganze Wahrheit leiten; denn er wird nicht aus sich selbst reden, sondern was er hören wird, das wird er reden, und was zukünftig ist, wird er euch verkündigen.
14 Er wird mich verherrlichen; denn von dem Meinen wird er nehmen und euch verkündigen.
15 Alles, was der Vater hat, ist mein; darum habe ich gesagt, dass er von dem Meinen nehmen und euch verkündigen wird.
Künftige Trauer und Freude der Jünger
16 Noch eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich nicht sehen, und wiederum eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich sehen; denn ich gehe zum Vater.
17 Da sprachen etliche seiner Jünger zueinander: Was bedeutet das, dass er sagt: Noch eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich nicht sehen, und wiederum eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich sehen, und: Ich gehe zum Vater?
18 Deshalb sagten sie: Was bedeutet das, dass er sagt: Noch eine kurze Zeit? Wir wissen nicht, was er redet!
19 Da erkannte Jesus, dass sie ihn fragen wollten, und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr befragt einander darüber, dass ich gesagt habe: Noch eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich nicht sehen, und wiederum eine kurze Zeit, und ihr werdet mich sehen?
20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet weinen und wehklagen, aber die Welt wird sich freuen; und ihr werdet trauern, doch eure Traurigkeit soll in Freude verwandelt werden.
21 Wenn eine Frau gebiert, so hat sie Traurigkeit, weil ihre Stunde gekommen ist; wenn sie aber das Kind geboren hat, denkt sie nicht mehr an die Angst, um der Freude willen, dass ein Mensch in die Welt geboren ist.
22 So habt auch ihr nun Traurigkeit; ich werde euch aber wiedersehen, und dann wird euer Herz sich freuen, und niemand soll eure Freude von euch nehmen.
23 Und an jenem Tag werdet ihr mich nichts fragen. Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Was auch immer ihr den Vater bitten werdet in meinem Namen, er wird es euch geben!
24 Bis jetzt habt ihr nichts in meinem Namen gebeten; bittet, so werdet ihr empfangen, damit eure Freude völlig wird!
25 Dies habe ich euch in Gleichnissen gesagt; es kommt aber die Stunde, da ich nicht mehr in Gleichnissen zu euch reden, sondern euch offen vom Vater Kunde geben werde.
26 An jenem Tag werdet ihr in meinem Namen bitten, und ich sage euch nicht, dass ich den Vater für euch bitten will;
27 denn er selbst, der Vater, hat euch lieb, weil ihr mich liebt und glaubt, dass ich von Gott ausgegangen bin.
28 Ich bin vom Vater ausgegangen und in die Welt gekommen; wiederum verlasse ich die Welt und gehe zum Vater.
29 Da sagen seine Jünger zu ihm: Siehe, jetzt redest du offen und gebrauchst kein Gleichnis!
30 Jetzt wissen wir, dass du alles weißt und es nicht nötig hast, dass dich jemand fragt; darum glauben wir, dass du von Gott ausgegangen bist!
31 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Jetzt glaubt ihr?
32 Siehe, es kommt die Stunde, und sie ist jetzt schon da, wo ihr euch zerstreuen werdet, jeder in das Seine, und mich allein lasst; aber ich bin nicht allein, denn der Vater ist bei mir.
33 Dies habe ich zu euch geredet, damit ihr in mir Frieden habt. In der Welt habt ihr Bedrängnis; aber seid getrost, ich habe die Welt überwunden!
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned[a] against me.’[b]
19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[d]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[e] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[f] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
“Come now; let us leave.
The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[g] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
The World Hates the Disciples
18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[h] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’[i]
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
16 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Bags of Gold
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
